Cabbage Patch Kids creator Xavier Roberts (born October 31, 1955 in Cleveland, Georgia) is an American artist and businessman. Roberts saw many methods for creating dolls from different materials during the late 1970s American Folk art movement, including the dolls of Martha Nelson Thomas of Louisville, Kentucky. He started experimenting with a quilted doll after being inspired by his mother’s quilts. Roberts developed a kind of doll he dubbed “Little People” after a lot of trial and error. Roberts and a small group of companions started travelling throughout the Southeast, visiting different folk art exhibits. Roberts started selling handmade dolls he dubbed “baby” at these shows. Roberts began manufacturing Little People in his hometown of Cleveland, at a renovated medical facility he renamed “Babyland General Hospital,” under the name Original Appalachian Artworks, Inc. By 1982, the Little People had developed into Cabbage Patch Kids, which soon became a popular toy. 20 million dolls were purchased in 1984 alone, and by 1999, 95 million had been sold globally. In January 1980, Martha Nelson Thomas, the designer of the Cabbage Patch Kids, filed a lawsuit against Roberts. Mrs. Thomas met Roberts in 1976 while selling her dolls at a show. He loved what he saw and requested her to make some for him to sell in a Georgia state park where he was working at the time.
