Known for his work as the former President of Universal Pictures, Thomas Henderson Mount (born May 26, 1948) is one of the most well-known independent producers in the United States. Thom Mount has left an unmistakable impact on the American film business during the course of his forty-year career as a film producer, entrepreneur, and studio head. He was born in Durham, North Carolina, and studied art at Bard College, where he graduated with a BA in art history. He also served on the Bard College Board of Trustees for many years. At the California Institute of the Arts, he earned his MFA in Film and Video Production. Having previously worked as a “start up” employee for Roger Corman, Jane Fonda, and Daniel Selznick, Mount began working as an assistant at Universal Pictures in the late 1970s. He worked at Universal Studios, where he created and oversaw a “youth unit” and low-budget comedies. At the age of 26, he was chosen as the company’s president (dubbed a “baby mogul” by Time magazine). Mount was mentored by MCA/Universal Chairman Lew Wasserman, who elevated him to the executive fast track and tasked him with overseeing studio connections that included Alfred Hitchcock, Dino DeLaurentis, Edith Head, George Roy Hill, and Paul Newman, among others. He was directly responsible for most of the studio’s success from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, having overseen the production of over 200 pictures during that time period. Mount also directed the critically acclaimed film Bull Durham. Mount is a co-founder of the Los Angeles Film School, a two-term president of the Producers Guild of America (which he was instrumental in revitalising), and a consultant for RKO Pictures, among other accomplishments. In 1977, he became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The year 2012 saw the launch of his first new business, Day for Night Productions, which is dedicated to the development and production of high-quality “young” genre films. The former Senator and Governor of New Mexico, Mount has lectured at many institutions throughout the world and served on the boards of several political and philanthropic organisations, including roles on presidential campaigns alongside Senator Ted Kennedy and Governor Bill Richardson. The President’s Advisory Board at Duke University, the Cal Arts Board of Trustees, and advisory boards at The University of Texas at Austin, George Eastman House, the North Carolina School of the Arts, Florida Atlantic University, and numerous socially progressive organisations were among the positions he held during his career. He has served as an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University and has been invited to lecture on a variety of topics, including media, social, and corporate problems.
