Mike Lange (born March 3, 1948 in Sacramento, California) is an American sportscaster best known for his work as the Pittsburgh Penguins’ radio play-by-play announcer. For his excellent performance as an NHL announcer, he won the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award in 200Lange, a native of Sacramento, California, joined the Penguins as a radio broadcaster in 1974 after working as a commentator for the Western Hockey League’s San Diego Gulls and Phoenix Roadrunners. He departed the Penguins after just one season because the club was in financial trouble and he didn’t know whether he’d get another employment. Lange called soccer games for the Washington Diplomats before returning to the Penguins for the 1976–77 season, when he became the team’s primary broadcaster. Lange was the main play-by-play announcer for the Penguins’ hockey radio and television network from 1975 to 2006, never missing a programme. Fox Sports Pittsburgh (now Root Sports) decided not activate the option year on Lange’s contract on June 29, 2006, claiming a wish to move in a different path. In a decision that was undoubtedly very controversial with fans, he was replaced by Paul Steigerwald, who had previously done the radio broadcasts. When Steigerwald took Lange’s position, he remarked, “I’m not going to attempt to take his place. He is, in my opinion, irreplaceable.” Lange signed a deal to work on the Penguins’ radio broadcasts on August 4, 200He continues to handle the radio broadcasts with former Penguin Phil Bourque, with the 2012-2013 season being Lange’s 36th straight year as a Penguins announcer.
