The former Major League Baseball pitcher and World Series champion Michael Christopher “Mickey” Callaway (born May 13, 1975 in Memphis, Tennessee) has passed away. The Cleveland Indians have hired him as their pitching coach for the upcoming season. Callaway was drafted out of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in the 7th Round of the 1996 Amateur Baseball Draft. He made his Major League debut with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1999, his first season in the majors. In his professional debut, he lasted 6 innings and earned the victory while going 2 for 3 with an RBI at the bat.
His contract with the Rays expired before to the 2002 season and he was transferred to the Angels. At the conclusion of the 2002 season, when Aaron Sele went down with a shoulder injury, he was the Angels’ 5th starting pitcher in place. He pitched effectively down the stretch for the Angels, earning them a World Series ring in the process…. He was released by the Angels and signed by the Texas Rangers at the end of 2003, where he would remain until the conclusion of his Major League baseball career in 200Following the 2004 season, he moved on to play professionally in Asia. From 2005 to 2007, he was a member of the Hyundai Unicorns of the Korea Baseball Organization, where he was named to the League All-Star team on two occasions.
He combined for a total of 30 victories in (’05 and ’06), including 16-9 in ’05 and 14-7 in ‘0The next year, after being sidelined by an elbow injury, Callaway served as the interim Head Coach at Texas A&M International University. During the 2008-2009 offseason, he joined with the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions of the Chinese Professional Baseball League, where he went on to win his last start and help the club earn a place in the postseason. Callaway completed his professional career with a total professional record of 116-72 and is the winningest pitcher in the history of the AAA Durham Bulls. Following his retirement from baseball following the 2009 season, Callaway started his professional coaching career in the Cleveland Indians system in 2010 as the pitching coach for the Lake County Captains, who went on to win the Midwest League championship. In 2011, he served as the pitching coach for the Kinston Indians, who finished second in the Carolina League.
