He was an Austrian and Swiss cinema and stage actor who also wrote, directed, and produced several of his own films. His second acting job in Hollywood was in the 1961 American film Judgment at Nuremberg, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. Having grown up surrounded by the performing arts and literature, his parents encouraged his interest in the arts.

His family was forced to leave Vienna in 1938 after Austria was seized by Nazi Germany, and they eventually moved in Zurich, Switzerland, when he was a kid. He was born in Zurich. After World War II came to an end, Schell decided to devote his time entirely to acting and directing. Before moving to Hollywood, he appeared in a number of German films, many of which were anti-war in nature.

Due to his ability to communicate in both English and German, Schell was the star of a number of films set during the Nazi era. The Man in the Glass Booth (1975; best actor), in which he portrayed a guy who had two identities, and Julia (1977; best supporting actress), in which he assisted the underground in Nazi Germany, were among the films for which he earned Oscar nods. His acting abilities extended beyond German characters, though, as he appeared in films and television shows portraying people as varied as Venezuelan politician Simón Bolvar, Russian monarch Peter the Great, and physicist Albert Einstein over the course of his career. He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of Vladimir Lenin in the television movie Stalin (1992). Schell appeared in a lot of plays on stage, and his performance as Hamlet was hailed as “one of the finest Hamlets ever.” In his private life, Schell was a talented pianist and conductor, having performed with conductors such as Claudio Abbado and Leonard Bernstein, as well as with orchestras in Berlin and Vienna. A famous Hollywood actress, Maria Schell, was also his older sister, about whom he made the documentary My Sister Maria in 2002, which was directed by him.
