Kenneth Benjamin “Kenny” Laguna (born January 30, 1954) is an American composer and record producer who is best known for his collaborations with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. The musician was born and raised in New York City’s Greenwich Village, where he began performing at high school dances at the age of twelve. As a songwriter and producer for Super K Productions, which was founded at Buddah Records by producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeffrey Katz in the late 1960s, he wrote songs for artists such as Tony Orlando, The Ohio Express, and The Lemon Pipers, frequently in collaboration with writers such as Bo Gentry, Bobby Bloom, and Ritchie Cordell. While working with Tommy James and the Shondells, Laguna contributed to their 1968 smash song “Mony Mony.” He also contributed to the second Ohio Express album, Yummy Yummy, on the piano and keyboards. Some of Kenny Laguna’s other credits include playing on and singing background vocals for the songs Simon Says, Goody Goody Gumdrops, Indian Give, and the majority of the 1910 Fruitgum Company’s record 1 2 3 Red Light, as well as playing on the Crazy Elephant’s “Gimmee Gimmee Good Lovin” and The Lemon Pipers’ “Green Tambourine,” as well as the Jay and the Americans’ “This Magic Moment” and “Walkin’ in the Rain One of his most well-known composition credits was for the song “Groovin’ With Mr Bloe,” which was initially released as a B-side for Tony Orlando’s band Wind and went on to become a hit single. The song was covered in the United Kingdom by a group of studio musicians known as Mr. Bloe, and it peaked at #2 on the UK singles chart in 1970; the original version was released, this time attributed to Cool Heat, and it just made it into the US singles list. The music of Andy Warhol’s film Lonesome Cowboys was composed by Laguna, who also collaborated with vocalists Darlene Love and Bill Medley, formerly of The Righteous Brothers, on a Los Angeles recording project as a producer. By 1972, he had contributed to or sung on more than 50 Billboard Top 40 songs. In the mid-1970s, he spent a period of time in the United Kingdom, where he worked with the Steve Gibbons Band, producing a series of albums as well as their UK smash single “Tulane,” a version of a Chuck Berry song. In addition, he worked in Los Angeles as a composer and producer for Beserkley Records, where he worked on songs by and for Jonathan Richman, Greg Kihn, Earth Quake, and a variety of other artists. As part of his collaboration with Earth Quake and record label head Matthew “King” Kaufman, he recorded a reworked version of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” which included lyrics from the television programme Gilligan’s Island as the theme song.  However, when Led Zeppelin’s attorneys threatened to sue the label, Little Roger and the Goosebumps pulled the single from the shelves. The remaining copies of the single have since been destroyed. After then, it was included on the collection CD Laguna Tunes, which was released in 2000. Laguna met and started working with Joan Jett soon after the dissolution of The Runaways in 1979, and the two became fast friends. His collaborations with Cordell and others helped her get her first solo record contract. He also co-produced her solo albums, including Bad Reputation (1980) and I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll (1981), among others (1981). In the early 1980s, he joined forces with Jett to form Blackheart Records. In 1982, he was also responsible for the successful rendition of “I Want Candy” by the English band Bow Wow Wow.
