Gerald “Jerry” Baldwin is an English-American businessman who, with Gordon Bowker and Zev Siegl, co-founded Starbucks in Seattle, Washington, in 197He was born in London, England.
Baldwin learnt about the coffee trade from Alfred Peet, whose shop Peet’s Coffee & Tea served as the idea for the establishment that is now known as Starbucks. During its first year of business, Starbucks bought roasted coffee beans from Peet’s Coffee & Tea. When Peet’s Coffee & Tea was placed up for sale in 1984, Baldwin was the driving force behind a group of investors that bought the business. In 1987, he sold his shares in the Starbucks Corporation. Baldwin served as Chairman of Peet’s Coffee & Tea until 2001, when the business became a publicly listed corporation; he currently serves as a Director.
The Specialty Coffee Association of America has also appointed Baldwin as a director and founding head of the Technical Standards Committee. Baldwin has previously served as president of the Association Scientifique International du Café (ASIC) and chairman of the Coffee Quality Institute. The Specialty Coffee Association of America awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contributions to the industry. He serves as the executive director of TechnoServe, a non-profit organisation that works in Latin America and Africa. Baldwin Wines, a Zinfandel grower and producer in California’s Sonoma Valley, was founded by him in 2001 as a family business.
